A person who is engaged, married or in a de facto relationship (including same sex relationship) to an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen may apply for a partner visa to live in Australia permanently.

Partner Temporary (subclass 820) and Residence (subclass 801)
This is an onshore 2 stages temporary visa and permanent residency visa allowing the holder to live and work in Australia permanently.
Stage 1:
The two subclass visas are lodged together in a combined application.
The applicant must be in Australia to lodge the application and when the temporary visa is granted.
The temporary visa holder can live in Australia until the decision of the permanent residency visa.
Stage 2:
After 2 years since the application was made, the temporary visa holder may be eligible for a permanent residency visa to live in Australia permanently.
The applicant may be in or outside Australia when the permanent residency visa is granted.
Partner Provisional (subclass 309) and Migrant (subclass 100)
This is an offshore 2 stages temporary visa and permanent residency visa allowing the holder to live and work in Australia permanently.
Stage 1:
The two subclass visas are lodged together in a combined application.
The applicant must be outside Australia to lodge the application and when the temporary visa is granted.
The temporary visa holder can live in Australia until the decision of the permanent residency visa.
Stage 2:
After 2 years since the application was made, the temporary visa holder may be eligible for a permanent residency visa to live in Australia permanently.
The applicant may be in or outside Australia when the permanent residency visa is granted.
Prospective Marriage (subclass 300)
This is a temporary visa for the holder to enter and remain in Australia to marry the Australian citizen, Australian permanent partner or eligible New Zealand citizen partner.
The applicant must be outside of Australia to lodge the application and when the visa is granted.
The visa holder must enter and marry the Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen partner within 9 months.
After the marriage the visa holder can apply for an onshore partner visa to live in Australia permanently.
